An alternative to hostels is staying in a hotel. They are usually notably more expensive for
solo travelers since they charge by the room instead of charging by the bed. If you fall to get a
bed in a hostel before they are all rented out, expect to stay in a hotel.
Hotels are a good choice for people traveling together. Hotels in Europe are usually smaller
than those in the US. They are often less consistent as well. In the US hotels generally have a
set style, with little difference even between hotel chains. This is not always the case in
Europe.
Having a bathroom in the room is not always the case in a European hotel. In some cases a
bathroom will be shared by a floor.
A notable difference in staying at a European hotel is that when you leave to just go out you
leave your room key at the front desk. Not a big deal, but if you don’t know it you’ll likely have
a confused exchange with a clerk.
