Backpacking
Europe

Introduction
Most backpackers will be going in the summer.  As mentioned, the majority of backpackers
tend to be college students so this is an easy time to get out.  Some will head over at other
times of the year.  You’ll also find that there are backpackers from certain countries at different
times of year based on the countries holidays and breaks.  Of course, there are pros and cons
to what time of year you go.

The summer is a good choice for a variety of reasons.  First, the weather is warm (but
sometimes hot) which translates to having to bring less stuff to lug around for weeks on end.
You won’t need to carry around extra layers or jackets.  Second, Europe is more “set up” for
travelers in the summer.  Attractions are more likely to be open and open for longer hours.  It
may be easier to see the things you want to see.  Finally, if you plan on partying much or
socializing a lot in your travels, summer is the time to go.  You’ll come across a lot more back
packers in summer than any other time of year.

Other times of the year have advantages as well.  The most obvious it will be less crowded.
Lines are shorter making it less competitive to find a place to stay and see the things you want
to see.  For some attractions, midsummer lines can go one for hundreds of people.  Also,
airfare is usually cheaper and prices are often better as locals aren’t getting as much business
as they do in the summer.
