Backpacking
Europe

Packing
A guidebook is a must have one your backpacking through Europe trip.  A guidebook will tell
you places in the city or country where you can eat, sleep and visit.  They are usually updated
yearly and will tell you prices and have maps.

There are many good guidebooks on the market.  The leading guidebooks belong to Lonely
Planet, Rough Guide, and Frommer’s.  Guidebook selection is all a matter of personal
preference, none are really better than any other.

Prices and content tend to be the same, with minor exceptions.  The main things that vary are
the format of the book.
T
he best way to select a guidebook is to just go down to a bookstore and flip through them.
Look for one that seems to be laid out in a format that you like, covers the specifics to your
level of satisfaction.  You may buy it online later if you are on a really tight budget.

Some people buy more than one.  I don’t recommend this.  The extra weight isn’t worth the tiny
bit of extra information.  If you want to see other companies’ guidebooks you are bound to
meet other people along your trip that will have it.

A tip that some people like to use is to cut out the pages of countries you know you aren’t
going to.  Guidebooks are a heavy item in the backpack and this could reduce a big piece of
that weight.  Sure, it doesn’t sound like much, but anything to reduce backpack weight helps.
Also, you may wish to cut pages out once you’ve been to a place.
