Backpacking

Packing
The type of backpack or luggage you choose will have a big influence on the amount of
comfort you have throughout your trip.  Most backpackers, as the name suggests, use a
backpack.  You could also use other things such as a suitcase, but most often this won’t work
out well.  There are two main types of backpacks, internal frame and external frame.

The backpacker’s backpack will generally be an outdoors camping backpack.  These have a
metal frame supporting the backpack and that frame can be within the backpack or have the
backpack attached to it, external frame.  Internal frame backpacks are by far the more common
choice.  The main advantage to them is that with the frame being enclosed it does not get
caught on stuff as you walk by.  Certainly handy in crowded areas.  The external frame
backpacks are more cumbersome, but it is nice to be able to attach things such as smaller
bags to the frame.  Because of this external frame backpacks could be considered more
versatile.

Another option is to use a traditional suitcase, but due to the amount of walking a backpacker
does this is not advisable.  It is far more advantageous to be able to carry everything on your
back than to try and lug it around by hand.  Most suitcases do of course have wheels, but with
the amount of stairs and uneven surfaces you’ll come across most would agree a backpack is
the way to go.

A backpack can be bought at nearly any sporting goods store.  Its good to be a little picky
about the one you choose, you’ll be relying on it quite a bit for an extended period.  Try several
on and see what’s comfortable to you.  Think ahead about the layout of the pockets, think
about what you’ll be taking and how you can lay it out conveniently in each backpack.  Size is
important, try to find one that’s just right for what you wan to bring.  Going to small is
obviously not wise, but its also not a good idea to get much bigger than you need.  This could
encourage you to take more than you need and you really don’t want the extra weight.
