Packing
Here is a basic checklist of stuff to bring.  Everyone’s needs vary and we all will make changes,
but this gives a pretty good idea of what to take:

The Essentials List
1.        Comfortable Back Pack – Try several out.  It may be best to go to the store and look/try
on then order on line to save money.  Try to go with a back as small as you can
conveniently use.  Plan out how you’ll use each pocket.
2.        Bag that can be scrunch up and used as a day bag – You may want to take day trips
where you won’t need your main bad.  Get a small duffel bag you can put a nights supply
in.  You can leave the main bag in a locker or hostel.
3.        Sleep Sheet – Simple concept, take a normal bed sheet a fold it in half.  Sew it down the
side, you have a lightweight sleeping bag.  You will often be expected to rent sheets in
hostels, some less clean than you may like.
4.        Money Belt – Pick pocketing is a bigger issue there than in the US.  There are two main
types, on that goes around your waste and one that goes around your neck.  Most
people prefer the one that goes around your waste.  Keep your tickets, passports,
money, and credit cards in here.  Keep anything that would ruin your trip if you lost or
had stolen.
5.        2 pairs of pants – Jeans are fine.  You may want to have something more formal too.
6.        2 pairs of shorts - Get the pants that turn into shorts and cut out the one above.
7.        3 shirts – Think comfortable.
8.        The lest amount of underwear and socks you can not gross yourself out by having
9.        Toiletries in a convenient, hard to make messing container
10.        A note book to use as a journal.
11.        Lock - bike style is best.  You’ll use this to secure your bag sometimes, such as on
trains.
12.        Towel – Its good to have at hostels and beaches.
13.        Really comfortable shoes, a second pair is a good idea if you can spare the room.
14.        A small alarm clock – Necessary for those early flights and train rides.
15.        Guide book – Read the tips of guidebooks for more info.
16.        Book to read – You’ll have lots of times on trains and waiting, get a decent book to pass
those.  When you finish it, trade it with someone else.
17.        Something to use as an eating utensil – I brought a fork, knife and spoon my first trip.
People thought it was silly, but they came in handy many times.
18.        Camera – How good of one you get is up to you, but a camera is a must have.  Make
sure to have a little overkill when it comes to film or memory space in it.
