Transportation
During your travels you will be using lots of various forms of
transportation. Cars, planes, boats, trains, and especially your
feet.
You will almost have to fly there unless you are a really good
swimmer. Book your plan ticket as early as you known when you
are going to get the best rates. If you don't know your exact dates
consider getting an open ended, or open jaw ticket. This will allow
you to get there on a set day, but leave when you are ready to
leave and in some cases from a choice of cities. Once inside
Europe you may still want to fly from place to place if you don't
mind having such a set itinerary. There are some incredible deals
from Ryanair where you can fly for literally just a few dollars if you
manage to hit one of their sales.
Nearly as important as the plane getting there is your rail pass.
By far the easiest way to get from city to city it has several
different options that you can find HERE. You should have an
idea of how long you want to go and how ambitious you want to
be. Typically passes are offered by a times used in such and
such period or by unlimited times in a period. Prices range
accordingly. Its cheaper if you are 26 or under, and avoid first
class, you can hardly tell the difference. Another good advantage
to riding trains is that if you take a night train you've got a place to
sleep (usually a reservation fee is required) for less than a hostel.
Just be careful, this is the most likely place to get your stuff stolen,
bring a good lock.
If you travel to an island you will probably take a ferry which is
kinda like a cheap cruise. Like a night train you'll get a place to
sleep (might be on deck though) and a fun way to travel.
Be prepared for a ton of walking. 15 miles a day is not at all
uncommon. Brings the best, most comfortable shoes you can. I
walked so much my feet actually bleed. So try to get your legs in
decent shape before hand and take this in consideration before
buying your pack.
Europe has magnificent public transportation. Buses are a
plenty, but the subway will become your best friend. Most major
cities have them and you can get nearly anywhere you want on
them. They are generally pretty safe, but keep a little caution,
pick pockets are not uncommon.
