Passport
You will need a passport, no getting around that. They are easy to get, but don’t wait on it,
make this one of the first steps in your trip planning. They can take several weeks to get from
the time you apply.
Many post offices offer passport services. You just have to fill out a relatively simple form, give
them some photos and a check.
The post office will take photos for you, but they charge a lot to do so. You can get passport
photos other places such a photo store or drug store for a fraction of the price.
Visas
You probably won’t need a visa for most or all of the countries you plan to visit if you are a US
citizen. Most backpackers will be traveling to EU (European Union) countries, and visas will
not be necessary.
