Backpacking
Europe

Going Home
Going home sucks.  There will be times in your trip where you wish you could pop home for a
few days, a vacation from your trip, but when the time comes, going home just sucks.  I’m just
warning you upfront.  For the past whatever length of time it was you have been living this
amazing adventure, going where people see in books and meeting fascinating people from all
over the world.  One day this is happening and then the next day you are back home to regular
life.  You’ve just had all these experiences and learned so much, but back at home nothing has
really changed.

You’ll talk to friends and family about just how great this has been, you’ll tell them your stories.
You’ll see in their eyes that they just don’t quite appreciate it.  They really can’t relate, though
most think they can.  The other backpackers can.  You’ll miss those people.

You’ll understand what I’m talking about more once you’ve been there done that.  I’ve known
so many travelers that can relate to this, it’s a depression really.  Not in a sad way, but in a
longing way.  Longing for adventure and craving new.  You’ll get over it of course, settle back
in.  The best thing to do is to start planning the next trip.  Think about all the things you missed
this time.  Think about what you’d do different and what you have to do again.

I think there are certain people who have in deep within them a need to experience.  A need for
always having something new.  Backpacking may awaken this, or bring it to the surface.  It did
for me.  It’s really something of a mixed blessing.  You can’t travel all the time.  But it certainly is
addicting.
